Current technology has heating system efficiencies at 97%
A Primer on Boiler Efficiency
pictured on the right is a 97% boiler and indirect water heater. The installation went in the same space as the old house heater freeing up the space utilized by the water heater.
A Boilers efficiency is based on how it is equipped.
For example a hot water heating system without a flue damper and a standing pilot depending on its age falls in the 60% to 70% range.
Boilers equipped with a flue damper are in the 80% range add a spark ignition and it can be as high as 84%
Boilers in the 80% to 84% range are considered mid efficiency. Boilers equipped with a draft inducer and pilotless ignition are also in this range.
Mid efficiency is a good upgrade from the 60% to 70% range. They can be used with an indirect fired water heater to make hot water with that 80 to 84% boiler. They utilize the existing chimney which needs to be in good condition and up to current codes to continue its use. Very often they require a relining.
High Efficiency
A new generation of user friendly high efficiency boilers were recently made available.
These boilers are over 90% and as high as 97.3%. They do not require the use of chimney so if your existing chimney requires a relining you could apply that money toward a high efficiency boiler. Coupled with indirect water heater and you have a state of the art system.
Features include modulating firing rate, outdoor reset, supply and return temperature sensors. These components work together to modulate the gas burned by the boiler so it matches the heating load on the house. In other words on a 50 degree day you may only need a third of your boilers capacity the central processor in the boiler will recordnize this and adjust the gas rate consumed by the boiler to reflect this. These boilers can be programed to transfer any heat left in the boiler at the end of the heating cycle to the water heater so that as little as possible is wasted.
Rebates and incentives
The Federal Goverment is currently offering a federal tax credit of 30% of the installation up to $1500.00
New Jersey's Clean Energy Program is also offering a $300.00 Rebate for boilers over 86%
